Special Educational Needs
To make sure that education is as inclusive as possible, there is help available for anyone who needs it. Specifically, Special Educational Needs (SEN) legislation provides the following resources for the following groups.
For disabled children schools must provide:
- Ramps and handrails to ensure accessibility.
- Special educational materials (Braille, audio books etc).
- Special training for teachers to help them integrate all students.
For children in care there should be:
- Personal Educational Plans (PEPs) to keep a structure to their education.
- Access to resources, to help them keep up or settle into a new school.
- A teacher assigned to look after them.
Special provisions for children with medical needs:
- If your child is likely to be off school for more than three weeks, tell their school and the LEA should provide distance learning tools.
Children with special educational needs:
- There are numerous special educational needs. For every need support, resources and help should be available.

Provisions for Gifted and Talented children
- ‘Gifted’ refers to children who excel in one subject or more in the school curriculum other than art, design, music and PE.
- ‘Talented’ refers to children who excel in art, design, music, PE, sports, dance or drama.
- ‘The Excellence’ in Cities (EiC) programme provides extra resources to identify, encourage, support and develop gifted and talented children in over 1,500 primary and secondary schools in 70 LEAs.
